Mike McCoy asked:

Because chiropractic deals directly with the spine and the soft tissue that surrounds that area, it is the perfect choice in dealing with all types of back injuries.  The practice of spinal manipulation has been around for hundreds of years and with today’s ever-progressing technology in the area of injury related pain, now is the best time to consult a highly qualified chiropractor in your area.  Even if you have tried conventional western medicine with no lasting results, there is hope out there to relieve your pain and regain the quality of life you once had before you sustained your spinal injury.  Look at the list of following injuries, and if you fit into any of them, a chiropractic doctor is your best choice for relief.

Auto Accident Injuries

Millions of people every year are involved in automobile accidents that result in sever spinal and neck injuries.  The most common being whiplash.  Whiplash is when the vertebrate and muscles in the neck are overextended both forwards and backwards in a very quick motion.  This commonly occurs in rear-end collisions and is the number one reason why people sue.  The symptoms of whiplash can vary from ringing in the ears, to dizziness, to vision problems and may not show up for days or weeks after the accident.  A chiropractor is extensively schooled on what to look for when it comes to whiplash and can treat it very effectively.  A combination of adjustments and massage to get everything back in line and loosened up will be the protocol of this injury; which are all done with no pain, no needles, no medications, and in a 100% non-invasive fashion.

Sports Injury

There are hundreds of athletes out there — both professional and recreational– that suffer from sports related injuries every year.  These injuries can bring even the most conditioned athlete to his knees in a matter of seconds and keep him there under the crushing pain.  He or she may be suffering from a herniated disc that is pushing on nerve endings in the spine.  Depending on the location of the herniated disc, the injured athlete could be suffering from such symptoms as a burning sensation running down their back, shooting pains in the legs, muscle spasms, or even weakness and fatigue.  Since athletes cannot allow themselves too much downtime, a chiropractor is an excellent choice for recovering from this type of injury.  Today’s state-of-the-art traction devices are used in chiropractic offices every day and exert a slow, even pulling on the spine in two directions in order to stretch the vertebrate apart and allowing the disc to reoccupy its previous location.  The chiropractor will advise the athlete to get regular massages and may even recommend progressive rehabilitation to keep the injured area strong and healthy so the same injury does not reoccur.

On the Job Injuries

These injuries are extremely common and can really affect an employee’s ability to make a living and not have to live in constant pain.  Not surprisingly, whiplash and herniated or bulging discs commonly fall into this injury category and can be treated in the same fashion as auto accident victims and injured athletes.

Margaret Winfrey asked:

There are several medical conditions that are suitable for chiropractic treatment, not just back pain and slipped or herniated discs.  In fact, some, such as allergies, would not normally be associated with chiropractics, yet many conditions that involve neural pathways are treatable using chiropractic therapy.  Here is a range of conditions that can be treated using non-invasive manipulative therapy.

Neck and Back Pain

The treatment of back pain, and other problems associated with the spine, is a classic application of chiropractics. Many spinal problems can be resolved using manipulative therapy much more effectively that by surgery.  A classic case is that of the bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar or cervical vertebrae. Often referred to as a slipped disc, the disc has not slipped because it is firmly attached to the vertebrae, but has actually ruptured.

A vertebral disc consists of a spongy shock-absorbent gel, the nucleus pulposus, surrounded by a tough annular sheath. Occasionally the gel will lose its strength, often through age or stresses on the spine, and rupture through the sheath creating a condition known as a herniated disc.  If the gel simply presses against the inside of the annulus and creates a lump, it is known as a bulging disc. The hernia or bulge can press against a nerve and cause extreme pain.

This can occur in the cervical vertebrae of the neck or the lumbar vertebrae of the lower back, and although surgery can be used to cut out the disc and then fuse the vertebrae together, chiropractics can offer a far better solution in IDD Therapy (intervertebral differential dynamic therapy). This non-invasive technique gently creates a pressure differential between the vertebrae that causes the disc to expand like a bellows and **** in nutrients and water to enable the rupture to heal with an average 86% success rate.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

CTS is caused by a pinched nerve in the tunnel of bones formed by the carpals in the wrist. Chiropractic care involves manipulation of the upper spine, elbow and wrist and also ultrasound therapy. There have been two studies carried out involving 25 and 91 individuals that have reported significant improvements in the condition after chiropractic treatment.

The second, involving 91 people, came to the conclusion that chiropractics was at least as effective as conventional treatment involving drugs and wrist supports. The condition can be caused by a misalignment in the spine, hence the manipulation of the upper spine and neck being part of the treatment.

Joint Problems

There are a number of causes of joint dysfunction, including osteoarthritis, degradation due to misaligned joints, disc problems and a few more. Chiropractic treatment can realign joints very effectively, and also resolve disc problems as discussed above. A lack of flexibility due to osteoarthritis can also be improved by manipulation with accompanying pain relief.

Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, shoulder and arm pain, visual disturbances and headache. Physical chiropractic therapy can be used in conjunction with strengthening exercise to treat the damage caused, and the neck and spine can be adjusted to get you on the road to recovery.

Allergies

Allergic reactions are caused by the immune system reacting to a trigger that it detects as being pathogenic. The processes that initiate the allergic reaction are passed through the neural system, down the spinal cord to the areas concerned.  Chiropractics can sometimes be used to help moderate the allergic reaction by working on the neuro-musculoskeletal system.

Pain

Pain, such as headaches and other neurological conditions, has many causes.  Sometimes chiropractic care can be used to moderate pain or eliminate it altogether, depending on its source. Common sources of pain that are treatable using chiropractics include trapped nerves, inflamed nerve roots and pressure being exerted on a nerve by, for example, a herniated disc or misaligned bones.  Each of these can be resolved by means of manipulative therapy, where traditional medicine would normally offer you a painkiller or some other drug.

Accidents

If you have been involved in an accident that could have resulted in misalignment of the bones in your spine or damage to your neural system then chiropractic treatment could help. Realignment of bones or gentle manipulation of areas of the spine could reduce nerve inflammation and debilitating pain.

There are many other conditions suitable for chiropractic treatment, not all medical. In fact, even if you feel fully fit a chiropractic check-up can often detect irregularities in your spine and joints that might not be causing you problems now, but will at some time in the future. It is not uncommon for spinal disorders to be detected and rectified long before they have been able to impact on the patient’s health.

The upshot is that chiropractic care can be used to treat a variety of conditions, some with no immediately obvious connection with the area being treated.  That is because the neurological system operates in such a way that pain can be felt in a part of your body some distance away from the source of the problem.  That is one reason why conventional medicine can sometimes miss the problem altogether, and treat a symptom rather than the cause. Not so with chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractors aim to provide treatment for conditions related to joints bones and muscles. They perform ‘adjustments,’ usually manually, to help correct various physical problems. By treating these conditions, the symptoms and painful effects occurring throughout the body and particularly, in the nervous system, can ideally be eased. Headaches are actually a common complaint heard in the chiropractic office and by performing various adjustments, a chiropractor may be able to help your headaches.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches in particular may prompt visits to the chiropractor as these can occur from contracted and tense muscles in the neck and back. Anytime the spinal bones are misaligned or compromised in some way, headaches can occur due to nerve or tissue pressure. Problems with the spine, including the neck and back areas are often missed and don’t receive examination. They can cause quite painful headaches and head pain may become chronic.

Headache pain may then be covered up for years through the use of over-the-counter medications. These medications treat the symptoms rather than the cause and also can result in medication overuse and rebound headaches. Therefore, seeing a chiropractor for diagnosis and treatment can be helpful. There is still controversy regarding the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment but ultimately, it may be wise to investigate and discuss with your doctor, various ways of treating headaches. Some treatments such as chiropractic care are still not widely supported but that does not mean you will not experience relief.

Cervicogenic Headaches

A cervicogenic headache is caused by the cervical spine and can occur from an absence of mobility in the upper cervical area. The term is used to refer to headaches where the primary causative agent is the spine. Chiropractic care is thought to be very helpful for this type of headache because it can correct the source directly. It is also suggested as a helpful treatment for other types of headaches such as common tension ones, because they may share the same cervical element. Tension headaches in particular can possibly benefit from spinal manipulation, as this can relax and stretch tense neck muscles and joints.

Migraines

Migraines are a type of headache that is considered less likely to benefit from chiropractic care, although this statement is still somewhat controversial and case studies have still been shown to provide relief for migraines through chiropractic care. Your chiropractor can discuss with you whether he or she is able to treat your migraines.

What Will a Chiropractor Do?

A chiropractor will perform various adjustments and movements, usually with his or her hands. The adjustments are meant to correct identified problems and allow you to regain movement and reduce headaches and other associated pain. Usually a chiropractor will also initially conduct an extensive background history as well as a thorough examination and possibly even x-rays. He or she will then usually provide a diagnosis and suggest an appropriate treatment plan. A chiropractor is not a replacement for your general medical doctor; rather, a chiropractor should be viewed as a complement to your main healthcare provider.

For some people, regular chiropractic care may be helpful and effectiveness will depend on your individual symptoms and headache causes. Be sure to seek out a registered chiropractor and don’t be afraid to check for credentials as well as patient referrals. Some people find that they do experience immediate headache relief while others will require ongoing treatment for several years. Sometimes when a malformation in the spine is undetected for a long time, treatment can be more complicated and often requires patience. Chiropractic care is considered by many to be an alternative treatment and it does not involve medication. It is another option that may help you in your quest for a headache free day.

Chiropractic is a profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, considering that these disorders affect normal health through the nervous system. The word “chiropractic” derives from the Greek words “cheir” and “praktkos” meaning “done by hand. The chiropractic treatment is manual therapy which manipulates the spine, other joints, and soft tissues. They believe in the philosophy that body can heal itself when the skeleton and nervous system are functioning normally. It has become a popular way for treating acute pain and spinal disorders. Further studies are being carried out in the field of ear infections, infant colic, migrane headaches and other such conditions. It also includes exercise, health and lifestyle counseling. We have two types of chiropractors . One who is an orthodox practitioner who veiws that medical diagnosis of patients complaint is not necessary for chiropractic care. They are called Straight chirpractors. The other sect is the Mixer chiropractor. They believe mixing osteopathic, medical, and chiropractic views in diagnosis. They are open to main steam of medicene. The chiropractic care is in divided opinion with the idea of subluxation. It bekieves that a vertebral subluxation affects the normal function of the body. This theory is ridiculed by most modern sceintist and medicine experts. In chiropractic care the spinal manipulation is generally safe if performed by a skilled practitioner. As a matter of fact the idea of subluxation remains untested but the chiropractors are skeptical of its clinical value. In 2005, subluxation was defined by the World Health Organization as “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity.” Spinal adjustments or chiropractic adjustment is the common treatment done by chiroprators. Spinal manipulation therapy are the techniques of using hands to manipulate, massage, adjust, apply traction or stimulate the spinal tissues. Chiropractic care like other medical treatment, benefits from the placebo (drugs which look alike but not same, primarily used in drug trials) response. The chiropractor normally learns from the patient the history of disease, eating habits, medicines taken and the details of how injury occurred. The duration of treatment depends on the seriousness of the injury. Long-term treatment is required for a chronic or serious injury and persons with ill health. After the patient’s discharge, a follow-up treatment is essential. The chiropractor guides the patients how to use In 2005, subluxation was defined by the World Health Organization as “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is common for a chiropractic patient to complain about aches, pain, mild headache, fatigue, or spasms for a few days after the treatment.

Because of the additional weight and stress on the framework of the body in pregnant women, chiropractic adjustments can help lower the incidence of pain in the low back and legs, and between the shoulder blades. In some cases, fewer headaches and problems with nausea and elimination may also result. Many chiropractors care for expectant mothers in the regular course of their daily practices.

Most importantly is that chiropractic helps the expecting mother by improving nerve system function.  Chiropractic has been based for over 100 years on correcting interference to the nervous system known as subluxations.  With a properly functioning nerve system free of subluxations it is easy to see how many aspects of this important time for an expectant mother will be made easier.  Many women rely on chiropractic care as a regular part of their pre-natal routine.

“The newly added additional weight tends to alter the body mechanics of a pregnant woman, I have worked with a lot of pregnant women and they have gotten great results,” said Dr. Steven Read, Clinic Director of Ortega Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville. “In fact I receive a lot of referrals from OB/GYNs, because they realize that chiropractic treatment is safe and effective,” he added.

Dr. Steven Read is a 1988 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. He has been practicing in Jacksonville, FL for over 20 years. He is the clinic director for Ortega Chiropractic and Medical Rehab. It is the city’s only facility featuring chiropractic, medicine, neuropsychology, physical therapy and massage therapy. It is located on Jacksonville’s Westside near NAS Jax. He treats patients from Orange Park, Riverside, Green Cove Springs, Oak Leaf Plantation, Argyle and all throughout Jacksonville. Yodle asked:

Back, pelvis, and neck pain have been primary complaints of pregnant women for decades. Unfortunately, many of the standard recommendations for relief of such pain-e.g., sleeping with a pillow between the knees, taking warm baths, etc.-simply don’t cut it for a large portion of expectant mothers. On the brighter side, chiropractic care for soon-to-be moms may solve not only pain problems, but other pregnancy/delivery problems, as well.

How Chiropractic Care Works

The human body holds a complex musculoskeletal system, with the bones and muscles working much like levers and pulleys to facilitate desired movement. This is connected to the body’s neurological system, since nerve impulses control the muscular movement that pulls on the bones. When the skeleton is misaligned, pain results because nerves and muscles become pinched or strained, and because the misalignment often creates excess pressure on the joints. Chiropractic adjustments work by realigning the skeleton, thereby relieving the nerve, muscle, and joint problems.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help Moms-to-Be?

When a woman is pregnant, the musculoskeletal system is required to accommodate the excess weight of the pregnancy. Although some of this weight is distributed evenly throughout the body as maternal fat stores, the majority of the weight is gained in the abdominal region and is made up of amniotic fluid, the fetus, and placenta. With gravity pulling against this extra weight, the body has to work harder to stay upright because so much weight is in one area. As the body tries to compensate for this shift in its center of gravity and to deal with the weight, the musculoskeletal system gradually becomes strained and pulled out of alignment. This is made worse by the fact that hormones released during pregnancy cause the joints to become looser so that the bones in the pelvis eventually can shift enough to allow the baby through the birth canal. The result is pain, most commonly in the lumbar, pelvic, and neck regions. Seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy can alleviate these problems.

Another benefit to chiropractic care during pregnancy that often is not discussed is an easier delivery. When the pelvis of a mother is misaligned as a result of the pregnancy, the baby sometimes can have a more difficult time turning into the correct position for birth because the pelvic bones are misaligned and therefore in the baby’s way. While this does not mean the baby cannot be birthed, it can result in problems such as shoulder dystocia, which can mean longer, harder labors and which can become life-threatening for both mother and baby without intervention. By contrast, an aligned pelvis during delivery ensures that the baby can turn correctly and thereby encounter minimal resistance through the birth canal.

There Are Benefits, But Is It Safe?

When done correctly, chiropractic care poses minimal to no risk to the mother and baby. However, because there are multiple chiropractic techniques, a pregnant woman should make sure that the ones her chiropractor employs are low pressure (i.e., that the bones are shifted gradually back into place rather than quickly popped into alignment). This is because the hormones of pregnancy make the joints particularly loose, which can result in overcorrection.

The main side effects of chiropractic care for pregnant women are the same as for non-pregnant individuals. These side effects may include headaches, tiredness, and soreness in the treated region. This is mainly because the shift back into alignment can put the treated region into stress until the muscles, nerves, and bones become adjusted to their new, correct placement. These are usually temporary. However, chiropractic care also can be considered safer than other treatments (especially during pregnancy) because it is a natural remedy and therefore does not have the complications that drugs or surgery could have.

Are There Other Things to Consider?

Pregnant women are advised not to lie on their back for long periods of time because the weight of the baby can press on main arteries that supply blood to the child. For this reason, pregnant women should make sure that their chiropractor adjusts them carefully in positions that take this into consideration. Many chiropractors also have special tables with a place cut out for the belly so that the mother does not need to lie flat on her back.

Women who already have hypomobility of the joints previous to their pregnancy should be particularly careful of the type of chiropractic adjustment they receive during gestation. The hormones of pregnancy can worsen this hypomobility and can make the risk of injury from a hard adjustment higher. For this reason, some chiropractors are hesitant to work on pregnant women, particularly those with this condition.

Because medications can affect how the body reacts to the chiropractic adjustment, pregnant women need to discuss any medications they are taking with the chiropractor. This includes prenatal vitamins and supplements. Pregnant women also need to discuss any previous physical conditions, pregnancy-related and otherwise, that may affect the effectiveness of the adjustment or which may cause injury if left unknown to the professional. The current obstetrician seen should be aware that chiropractic care is being sought so that medications and recommendations from the obstetrician do not conflict with the chiropractic care.

The Bottom Line

Although a pregnant woman may experience some minimal side effects from a chiropractic adjustment, the benefits of chiropractic care that is correctly given outweigh the risks. As long as the chiropractor is well-informed of the pregnancy and other medical conditions and treatments, chiropractic care is a safe, effective, natural remedy to pain related to pregnancy misalignments and can help the mother to deliver more easily.

When one thinks of weight loss, their mind generally tends to go in the direction of exercise, salads, and hard work.  Others may even ponder the idea of taking that magic pill that claims to shed those pesky extra pounds overnight.  But, it is highly unlikely that seeing a chiropractor enters the minds of those seeking to get rid of the bulge that is plaguing their everyday lives and keeping them from enjoying everyday activities that most normal weight people take for granted.  Actually, a doctor of chiropractic is an excellent tool to have in your wight loss arsenal if you want to really achieve long lasting results.

When a person is studying to be a chiropractor, they not only learn the why’s and where how’s of the spine and its connection with every part of the body, they are also schooled in a holistic approach to healing the body by use of supplements and herbs.  Chiropractors have a deep determination to help all those entering their practice live overall healthier and thus happier lives and in order to do that, you need to treat the body as a whole rather than the parts.  They know that you can only get out of your body what you put into it, so why not put the highest quality vitamins, herbs, and supplements in order to help you attain your physical goals?

On your initial visit, your chiropractor will sit down with you and ask an array of questions in order to determine your lifestyle, your eating habits, and your exercise regimen.  He or she will then ask you what type of life you want for yourself and what your goals are for weight loss.  If these goals are too lofty and will only leave you feeling unsuccessful, the chiropractor will suggest a more goal friendly path that will end with positive results.  You will then both work together in order to create a detailed plan that you will follow to achieve the goals you set for yourself.  If at any time you are feeling overwhelmed or discouraged, your chiropractic professional will be there to help counsel you and get you back on the path to weight loss achievement.

During this consultation, your chiropractor will also determine if there has been any injury done to your spine due to the excess weight that you have been carrying around.  Many times in heavier women, upper back pain due to bra straps pulling on the shoulders is very commonplace.  There is also more pressure put on the spine to hold all of the excess weight which can lead to herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or narrowing of the spinal canal.  All of these injuries can be resolved with the use of spinal manipulation, decompression therapy, and progressive rehabilitation that your chiropractor can do on your subsequent visits.  So not only can your chiropractic professional halt your pain, he or she can also help you find a better nutritional balance in your life thus resulting in the weight loss that you have been trying to achieve but could not up to this point

Margaret Winfrey asked:

When seeking chiropractic care in Atlanta, there are certain things you should keep your eyes open for. Chiropractic care is a profession, and Doctors of Chiropractic, sometimes simply referred to as chiropractors, believe in the body’s inherent ability to heal itself with just a little help that avoids drugs, surgery or any other invasive technique. They are generally involved in the treatment of neurological and musculoskeletal problems such as spinal conditions and those involving pain, such as sciatica and back pain. Their treatment involves no surgery or medication, just manipulation that can be carried out manually or by machine.

Some forms of Chiropractics can be harmful if not carried out correctly by trained chiropractors, and it is highly recommended that when seeking chiropractic care in Atlanta you make sure that your doctor is certified with the NACM (National Association of Chiropractic Medicine).  Typical conditions with which you visit a chiropractor include joint pain, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and neck and back pain among many other similar conditions. Frequently patients will have tried more traditional remedies such as surgery or pharmaceutical medication without achieving a lasting cure, and have decided to try chiropractics as a last resort. It is important therefore, that you keep an eye open for indications that your choice of chiropractic care in Atlanta might not be the right one.

For example, you should avoid any chiropractor who claims to be able to cure a disease, and you should carefully check out anybody that makes claims to practice preventive care. This is true in Atlanta as anywhere else in the USA. Real chiropractors do not use immunizations, and nor do they use ongoing X-rays after the initial examination. Some chiropractors are not fully trained and have set up in business without the proper certification. In fact, had some people considered a qualified Doctor of Chiropractics as their first port of call when seeking chiropractic care in Atlanta they might well have saved themselves a lot of time and pain, not to mention money.  A chiropractic physician will first interview you to find out about your condition and general state of health, and will give you a physical examination.

If deemed necessary, this could include x-ray examination and perhaps a laboratory analysis.  The whole objective of this is to get a good idea of your musculoskeletal structure and the nature of your condition.  However, they will also ask you questions about your diet, stress levels and other aspects of your life that could influence your medical and mental condition. In reaching a diagnosis a chiropractor will also try to establish a cause, or origin of the problem. It is always important to get to the root cause and deal with that rather than do as many physicians do and treat the symptoms.

That does not remove the problem, simply makes it less noticeable, but it will always still be there. Thus, the bulging disc will be treated, and not just the pain that it causes. The sciatic nerve that it is pinching in your spine might be the cause of the severe leg pain you are experiencing, and there is little point in treating the leg if the root problem lies elsewhere. Perhaps there is a misalignment of bones in your neck that is causing a problem in your arm. The chiropractor can adjust that alignment without surgery and cure the pain in your arm, even though it originates in your neck.

The chiropractor will try to find out what is causing the misalignment:  is it congenital, the result of an accident or your bad posture? By dealing with the cause of the misalignment, a repetition of it can be avoided, so not only are you having the pain in your arm fixed by tracing it to a bone misalignment in your neck perhaps pinching a nerve, but also the cause of the misalignment also rectified. That’s far preferable to giving you some painkillers and sending you home. If your chiropractor offers you painkillers as their first treatment, give them a wide berth. Sometimes they might be necessary but not before the condition has been thoroughly examined and a course of treatment set. Chiropractic treatment might involve regular massage, stretching exercises or even strengthening exercises so that your own muscles become strong enough to overcome the underlying problem. The initial step will be to reduce the pain or discomfort you feel, and that might happen quite quickly.  You might feel that you are being cured, but in fact it is only the symptoms that are being treated at this stage.

Once you are feeling more comfortable, and are relatively free of pain, rehabilitation begins that involves dealing with the underlying cause of your discomfort. This could involve manipulative treatment and strengthening exercises so that your neuro-musculoskeletal system is functioning as it should be. After that your chiropractor will formulate a program of nutrition and exercise for you, designed to prevent the condition from recurring, and to improve your general well being and health.

All of this takes time, and in chiropractics it is a case of little and often.  Frequent small changes to skeletal alignment or other biomechanical aspects of your body will allow problems to be resolved at a proper rate.  Too fast and the changes will not have time to become permanent, and although they might appear to be effective, you will soon suffer a relapse.  Many people find that chiropractics work for them where the more traditional techniques have not, and if you suffer from musculoskeletal problems, or suffer back pain, disc problems or any form of neural pain, then you are advised to visit a Doctor of Chiropractics who will be experienced in dealing with your kind of problem. However, when seeking chiropractic care in Atlanta make sure that your choice is qualified and NACM certified.

Alex Levin asked:

Background

A health care profession that dates back to ancient Greece, chiropractic is a hands-on, drug-free therapy that is intended to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal complaints such as back pain, joint pain, sports injuries and headaches. Chiropractic treatment puts special emphasis on the spine under the hypothesis that musculoskeletal disorders affect the body via the nervous system. A chiropractic physician’s primary tools are their hands, which are used to improve joint mobility by applying controlled force. In addition, chiropractors are trained to counsel patients on various aspects of everyday health and lifestyle decisions, including diet and exercise.

The Short Answer:

So is chiropractic a legitimate medical science? Does it work?? The short answer is yes, chiropractic can be an effective, and cost-effective, way to treat certain ailments, as long as you’re being treated by a qualified chiropractor.

The Long Answer:

According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), “chiropractic treatment is both safe and effective” for certain musculoskeletal ailments, including neck pain, headaches, and in particular, back pain. In a study reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, patients with chronic lower back pain who went to see chiropractors had quadruple the satisfaction scores of those who were treated by family physicians.

Although chiropractic is becoming more and more accepted in mainstream medicine, it remains a controversial topic. Medical doctors consider chiropractors to be practitioners of Complementary and Alternative Care (CAM), a label chiropractors reject. One of the main reasons chiropractic is so controversial is that some of its practitioners, most notably its founder, D.D. Palmer, believed that all illnesses can be cured through chiropractic treatment. Unfortunately, the science on this just doesn’t pan out. If you come across a chiropractor making similar claims, such as having the ability to treat diabetes solely through chiropractic care, run the other way! According to the National Institute of Health, “the effects of chiropractic treatment on nonspinal conditions, such as high blood pressure or ear infections, have not been scientifically proven.”

Is it Safe?

For the most part, the answer is yes, but any risks depend on the specific type of chiropractic treatment used. For example, side effects from chiropractic adjustments can include temporary headaches, tiredness, or discomfort in parts of the body that were treated. The likelihood of serious complications, such as stroke, appears to be extremely low and related to the type of adjustment performed and the part of the body treated. The risk of complications increases in cervical-spine or neck manipulations and affects 1 out of every 500,000 people.

If you are considering seeing a chiropractor, inform your current health care provider of any treatments you are getting or considering.

When Should I See a Chiropractor?

If you experience unexplained pain or chronic pain (pain that lasts longer than it should) in your joints or muscles, you should see a chiropractor. As a general rule, you should not see a chiropractor if you are not experiencing pain or if you are concerned with an aesthetic flaw, such as abnormal curvature in your neck. Many people do not have a “normal” neck curve, according to Dr. Homola, author of Inside Chiropractic: A Patient’s Guide, and that doesn’t mean they require treatment or that they will develop a problem.

To sum up, chiropractic can be a safe, affordable and effective alternative to conventional medicine for many ailments. However, chiropractic care should ideally be accompanied by medical care to ensure that chiropractic treatment is the best treatment. When you’re being cared for by a chiropractor and an MD, you get the best of both worlds.
